Hockey Report

On Wednesday 8th January, the Loreto junior hockey team travelled to Limerick where an exciting exhibition of hockey took place against rivals Villiers.

The game was definitely nothing easy, with an early goal from Villiers, Loreto were put at an immediate 1-0 disadvantage. The girls came under pressure again and again from Viller’s forwards but Shauna Hewitt pulled off brilliant saves helped by backs Fionnuala Hoctor, Caroline Cotter, Ellen Butler and Orla Gaughran.

Major help from Aisling Deely, Beth Fitzpatrick and Aisling Walsh proved vital at midfield just before half time.

The second half was brightened by an early Loreto goal from centre midfield player Aisling Deely, leaving the game level.  Loreto were unlucky not to score again as shots from Evrena Everard, Aisling Whelan and Annie Cotter were saved. Sarah Hayes made an entrance and played a great game. Ready to go on were the subsitutes Jessica O’Donovan,Leanne Prout and Olivia Padjczenko.

On Monday 13th January , the Loreto junior hockey team travelled to Limerick to play Laurel Hill. This game showed a high level of skill and Loreto were very unlucky to come out the losing side.

Loreto played brilliantly from start to finish and Orla Gaugran, Ellen Butler, Fionnuala Hoctor, Caroline Cotter did brilliant defending but unexpectedly Laurel Hill put an unstoppable strike past goalie Shauna Hewitt. Great efforts from Aisling Deely and Evrena Everard in midfield added to the Loreto performance. Aisling Walsh nearly had her name on the score sheet but her excellent shot was stopped by the Lauren Hill goalie.

Just before half time , the score became 2-0 when Laurel Hill got a great goal which Shauna Hewitt could do nothing about.

Loreto went out to play the second half with hope of making a come back, and early into the half, Aisling Deely put a shot in the back of their net. This gave Loreto a great boost and 2nd years Lizzie Ryan and Aoife Hayes were introduced which added to Loreto’s excitement. Unlucky shots came from Aisling Whelan, Jessica O’Donovan, Sarah Hayes and Beth Fitzpatrick, but unfortunately they were denied by the Laurel Hill defense. Despite best of efforts, Loreto couldn’t get another goal.

All in all it was a great game and Loreto have it their all but unfortunately it didn’t work out for them on the day!
