Inaugural Agricultural Science Field Trip for Mr. Wallace and TY’s!

On a glorious Thursday 23rd of September, Fiona & Mr Wallace accompanied the inaugural TY Agricultural Science class on a field trip to Cantwell’s Court, just outside Kilkenny City. Here the group were met by farm manager Cathal Wims, who kindly gave us a tour of this impressive new dairy unit.

The class were brought out to the paddocks to see the 500 strong Friesian & Jersey cow herd, where Cathal and the students had a most informative discussion about the day-to-day management of the operation. We were then taken to see the state of the art 60-unit rotary parlour, handling & housing facilities. The emphasis is on high protein content from the milk produced at Cantwell’s Court Farm. Declan Morrissey (MD) of the grass2milk company, explained how the milk is destined for the Chinese market, as a baby milk product. A big thanks to Cathal & Declan for their time and help in making this historical field trip for the Loreto happen!

The students really enjoyed this trip to the farm on a beautiful autumnal day, furthermore they gained an invaluable insight into dairy management & good animal husbandry.
