On Monday 2nd December, Loreto’s Junior hockey team travelled to the Ursaline Convent in Thurles to play UCT in what would be a highly competitive match with both sides displaying a great level of skill. After a great win from the Senior hockey team, winning 4-0 against their competetors UCT, the Junior team felt quite under pressure to come away with a win as well! An intense game it was as both teams played with great passion and determination on the pitch.Loreto proved strong in team work with excellent passes from all corners of the pitch and, it was obvious from the start that Loreto were the stronger team. But when the team came under pressure, great defensive work from Fionnuala Hoctor, Orla Gaughran and in particular Ellen Butler who stopped a shot from entering her own net just as it neared the line. This save proved crucial in the end. After being unlucky in the first short corner, Aisling Deely, backed up by Aisling Whelan ,Evrena Everard, Aising Walsh and Beth Fitzpatrick, stepped up to take another one which went in after a brilliant shot. This gave the team a good boost just before half-time.
When the second half started the team were rested and ready to go again, knowing that a second goal was needed.Aisling Deely came lucky again when she was successful in another short corner which put her name on the score sheet once again.
After great play from the goalie, backs , midfielders and forwards, the game came to an end and what a relief it was as UCT put Loreto under a lot of pressure towards the end with plenty of goal shots. All in all it was a great display from the Loreto team who were delighted with another win.
