Loreto Students nominated for International Olympiad Award13 Oct 2014
Two Loreto Students nominated for top International Olympiad Award in Science and Maths
Well done to Deirbhile Fitzgerald and Orla Gaughran who were awarded joint Best Overall Junior Cert Result in Loreto for the 2014 Junior Cert. They were presented with their award during the recent Annual Autumn Awards ceremony. Both students received the maximum 11 A grades in all subjects taken.
Furthermore, both Deirbhile and Orla have qualified for this year’s Irish European Union Science Olympiad (IrEUSO) based on their exceptional Junior Cert Results in Maths and Science. The IrEUSO Olympiad is an individual, subject based (biology, chemistry or physics) science competition for students who are sixteen years of age or younger on the December 31st prior to the competition. The award ceremony is held annually in Dublin City University (DCU), where all participants receive a certificate. Each student who qualifies as a participant sits an exam in their chosen field. Orla has chosen Physics, while Deirbhile has opted for the Chemistry exam. These are carefully scrutinized and corrected and the top three students are awarded gold medals, the next three, silver and the next three bronze. The gold & silver medal winners represent Ireland at the European Union Science Olympiad in Klagenfurt, Austria in December. The bronze medal winners are on the reserve team. All participants will be invited to participate in ‘Practical Training’ in February/March next year. Well done Deirbhile and Orla and best wishes in the final award ceremony I November.
